Kitchen Herb Inhalation Recipe for Colds & Congestion

All Covid aside, it’s cold and flu season, so I’m going to share this inhalation recipe with you.  It’s great for colds and congestion, and I’m sure it would help even with such caused by Covid.

I know most of you probably don’t have big collection of medicinal and magickal herbs, (yet), so I thought I’d start with a recipe using ingredients that you’re likely to have in your own kitchen among your culinary herbs and spices and that is a quick and easy remedy.  Gather ingredients after you put the water on to boil and you’re done and done in under 10 minutes.

This is a recipe I came up with in the long ago before the internet, and before I had access to a wide variety of herbs, myself. It’s an inhalation recipe, so basically you’ll put the herbs in a glass or ceramic bowl, pour boiling water over them, then close your eyes, toss a tea towel over your head to help trap the steam and breathe deeply for 5 minutes or so.

  • Black Pepper (Crush or crack peppercorns if you have them.  If not, ground black pepper will do.)
  • Lemon Peel
  • Bay Leaf

These herbs combine to be both soothing to tender mucous membranes and also act as an expectorant to help get rid of that congestion.

Again I must stress: CLOSE YOUR EYES. The steam, while being lovely in your nose, throat and lungs, will sting and burn your eyes.

Alternatively or additionally to the Bay Leaf, you may add:

  • Eucalyptus Leaves
  • Ginger
  • A gob of my  Winter Rub or (if you’ve no other choice) a gob of any OTC Vapor Rub.

If the herbal (essential) oils are still visible atop the water, put a lid on it and you may reheat in the microwave a couple of times for use throughout the day. 3-4 times a day should be sufficient.  Last treatment just before bed to open up those nasal passages for a good night’s sleep.

Do leave me a comment if you try this remedy and let us all know how it works for you!
