It’s Feeling Fall

As you can see, it’s time to chop down the sunflowers and save some seeds for munching as well as for sharing with the birds.  If you look up to the top right of the drooping sunflowers you’ll see a few small yellow flowers atop those tall, swaying stalks.

Here in thornesworld we know summer is truly on its way out when the sunchokes bloom.  Also known as sunroot and earth apple, and for some strange and unknown (at least to me) reason,  Jerusalem artichokes. They are actually in the aster family and are a native sunflower,  Helios anthos tuberous. I have a large crop this year, because I didn’t dig up any of the delicious roots or tubers last year, so they’ve spread a bit.

The tubers have a nutty, earthy flavor and are delicious sliced thinly and eaten raw (like jikama) alone or in salads, added to your favorite salad or stir fried, or boiled or baked like potatoes (although I haven’t tried them that way yet).

Magickally I use the bright yellow petals in workings for prosperity and and in truth-seeking as well as for making wishes.
