Bath Bombs and Shower Fizzies

Who doesn’t love bath bombs and fizzies? They’re wonderful in both bath and shower and if we use natural ones made with real essential oils they are also good for our minds, bodies and spirits.

The bummer is that the really good ones are so expensive to buy, that I end up feeling like I have to save them for a special occasion or serious need. This recipe can be made for under the cost of a couple of good bath bombs, and it takes … maybe half hour to make.  Max.

The photo above are my favorite de-stressing recipe, made with lavender & bergamot essential oils and a handful of lavender buds.  I have to be honest, though. It’s a PITA rinsing the herbs off my skin and down the drain, so you may or may not want to skip adding herbs.

Adding your essential oils is also a bit by the seat of your pants.  No one ratio is going to be pleasing to all.  I’m sure some will prefer more and some less scent. For this recipe 12-15 drops is a good amount. But here’s a review of my little oils ratios if you want to figure it out for yourself.

Let’s start with a total essential oil ratio of 2%.

Here’s a little example chart to start you off:

  • 10 mL/ 2 tsp = 6 drops
  • 15 mL/ 3 tsp/ 1 T = 9 drops
  • 30 mL/ 6 tsp/ 2 T = 18 drops

This is a safe ratio even for sensitive skin and children, but do make sure that you’re not sensitive to the essential oils you choose. You may safely raise your ratio to 4% for a stronger scent but above that you’re entering medicinal dosage ratios and you’d want to know what the effects would be.  Please use care with essential oils.

For Shower Fizzies for colds and congestion (Not recommended in the bath for those with sensitive skin):

  • 8 drops Lemon
  • 7 drops Eucalyptus

For Relaxation/ Sleep:

12-15 drops of any of these oils combined in a way that’s pleasing to you.

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Chamomile
  • Peppermint
  • Bergamot
  • Sandalwood
  • Cedarwood
  • Marjoram

For Stress Relief:

12-15 drops of any of these oils combined in a way that’s pleasing to you.

  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Lemongrass
  • Neroli
  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Ylang Ylang
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • coloring pigment – (mica powders or other dry coloring preferred) optional
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons oil (sweet almond oil, melted coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.)
  • 3/4 tablespoon water
  • 12-15 drops essential oil
  • Bath bomb molds (No need to go out and buy molds if you don’t have them already.  Ice cube trays work perfectly!

(These are made with several different mica colors)

  1. Mix together all of the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add as much or as little color pigment to achieve desired look. Whisk gently to combine.
  2. In a separate bowl or cup, combine the liquids.  The oils and water won’t mix, so don’t spend time trying to get them to.  It just makes it easier to handle them all together).
  3. Add the liquid to the dry mixture very slowly as it will cause the citric acid to begin fizzing and we don’t want it to fizz and foam all over the place.  Plus, we’ll lose all the fizz we want to save for our bombs/fizzies. Our end texture is like wet sand.
  4. Pack the mixture into your molds reasonably tightly.  If using a 2 piece mold like the balls, overfill each half a bit then compress tightly together, then unmold carefully.  If using one piece individual molds you may unfold, but if using multi molds or ice cube trays, let the fuzzies cure for a few hours before unmolding.
  5. Cure for 24 hours before use and store in an airtight jar or other container.
